Nigeria relies almost entirely on road transportation. During the oil-boom years of the 1970s, new long-distance road links were built. Now that revenues have shrunk, maintenance is the major problem. The road accident rate is among the worst in the world. The small railroad system, built for the once-thriving bulk trade, is today very slow and badly maintained. Nigerian Airways' international operations have been privatized as Air Nigeria. The internal air market has shrunk since the prosperous years of the 1970s.
